- CBD for pets
We are familiar with the effects of CBD cannabidiol and how it can help fight various diseases. As different studies have shown, CBD is effective in a variety of situations, and medical marijuana has been legalised or decriminalised in many countries, including the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, Belize, Mexico, Uruguay, Canada and 19 of the 50 US states. Other countries are also moving in that direction.
CBD and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) are the two main cannabinoids found in cannabis. CBD is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid and THC is a psychoactive one. Due to the properties of THC, there are differing opinions on the efficacy and reliability of CBD oil as a drug.
Nevertheless, depending on the health condition, both CBD and THC offer many benefits to patients.
Numerous studies have been conducted and published in order to determine the effects and properties of CBD and THC. For example, CBD is notable for its positive effects on inflammation, diabetes, nausea and anxiety.
Also, because of its effectiveness with animals, many veterinarians recommend it as a helpful remedy. If an animal feels stress, anxiety, pain, or fear, CBD oil can help – it has a positive effect on all of these issues, as well as an antidepressant effect!
How do I know that my pet is having problems?
If you are a new pet owner and sometimes can’t figure out what your pet wants, there is a way to understand the pet’s problems. If your pet is afraid of lightning, thunder, strangers, hides under the bed at loud noises, they may have an anxiety disorder. However, there is nothing to worry about as all pets to some degree feel anxious or stressed, just like us humans.
What does “anxiety” mean for animals?
Animals are very similar to humans in that they also have to deal with stress and fear. There are two types of anxiety states that pets face – situational and behavioural. Situational anxiety involves a reaction to changes in the environment. Behavioural anxiety includes fear of separation and sustained aggression. Situational anxiety is somewhat easier to manage and understand, however behavioural anxiety often requires the assistance of a professional.
Symptoms of a pet’s anxiety:
You may notice one or more symptoms, depending on how much anxiety or stress your pet is experiencing. Many animals become stubborn and hyperactive. Tell-tale signs include pacing back and forth, barking, panting, whimpering, trembling, fidgeting, aggression, loss of appetite. More serious symptoms include dilated pupils, unsocial or unusual behaviour, and urinating indoors despite being house-trained.
Fortunately, CBD oil can be used to help pets with situational anxiety as well as other ailments.
How does CBD oil help with pet anxiety?
As learned earlier, CBD is one of the cannabinoids found in hemp. It is an entirely natural substance. CBD is a non-psychoactive element that, when ingested, reacts with the endocannabinoid system to reduce and relieve anxiety and stress.
The endocannabinoid system was discovered relatively recently and has not yet been adequately studied. However, we know that there are cannabinoid receptors in the body and brain that form part of the central nervous system. When released by the body, or from other sources, endocannabinoid chemicals improve the body’s ability to produce serotonin, which is a natural mood stabiliser. CBD oil is one way to achieve this.
CBD reacts to, activates and communicates with CB1 and CB2 receptors in the brain. This reduces tension and stress for pets. Cannabinoid receptors are endogenous to the brains of animals and play an important role in controlling their mood, memory, appetite and pain. The brain is dominated by CB1-type cannabinoid receptors, whereas the immune system contains more CB2 receptors. As a result, CBD has a relaxing effect on the brain and can help with seizures, pain, and animal arthritis.
Many people are afraid to give their pets CBD oil because they fear the animals may become intoxicated or uncontrollable. But these effects are caused by THC, the psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis. CBD oil is most often free of THC. However, be sure to carefully read the product description before using the oil.
In 2015, Spanish and American researchers reviewed studies on CBD and its effects on anxiety relief. These studies included data from laboratory
experiments in mice and rats, as well as clinical studies in humans. Studies have shown that CBD oil produces specific effects for anxiety relief and can be useful in controlling stress-induced anxiety, as well as obsessive-compulsive behaviour. Some studies have shown that CBD accelerates the growth of new cells in the hippocampus, the part of the brain that plays an important role in memory formation, because it is where cognitive processes take place. By accelerating the growth of new cells in this area of the brain, CBD can be effective in reducing anxiety.
